Merry X-mas!!!

No, I have not suddenly started a campaign to get “Christ” out of “Christmas.” Most Christians automatically assume that “X-mas” means and always has meant crossing out the name of Christ. I want to submit that perhaps the term goes back a bit further than that. Maybe even with roots as far back as the 4th century A.D. You see, in Greek, the first letter of Christ’s name is Xi.

So on the contrary, I’d like to see a campaign started to put Xristos back into “X-mas.” And instead of boycotting people who use the term, take the opportunity to tell people what that “X” really stands for.

Very interesting. My question is, did you learn that on Moody radio like I did? =D
Sure was a great time last night! I hope we can sing together as a group more often. Merry Christmas! :)

Hmmm. Actually, I didn’t. I am not sure where I first learned it. But there is information about it everywhere. I am sure we will be singing quite a bit in the future!

    Hi, Chris!

How interesting. I had never heard that before.

I’m curious, however - is this the actual origin of the popular abbreviation “X-mas” or is this a kind of Christian alternative?

In either case, I have to wonder if, by the time I’m done explaining to someone what the “X” could possibly stand for, it wouldn’t be easier to just say “Merry Christmas” in the first place!

Intriguing, nonetheless. Thanks for sharing, and I hope you and your family have a blessed Christmas. (On a side note: Bravo for having a website that allows people to comment without creating an account or some kind of user profile!)

    hmmm I think I had to make a profile….

No, there are no profiles. The comments just have to be moderated by me so that I don’t get spam all over my blog. I don’t like blogs that require a profile/password. That’s why I pretty much quit using Xanga a few weeks after first getting it and got my own site instead.
