Just as I Expected…
Modern and Contemporary Christian Lack of Thought. I am to endure another class of relativistic nonsense. The reading for today extolled the virtues of religious pluralism and condemned adherence to an absolute standard of Truth as a form of idolatry. Whoa, buddy. You’re a bit mixed up there.
Actually, as I pointed out in class and the instructor conceded, true relativism is impossible. Because you must always be relative to something, and that something will be your absolute standard of truth. If one says, “I do not believe that there is any absolute standard,” then that principle becomes the absolute standard by which you judge all matters of truth.
For the epistimologically self-conscious Christian, that absolute standard is the Word of God. For the relativist, who must try to get away from any standard, it is culture, rationalism, the autonomous mind of man. Both must presuppose that the Bible is either the inspired revelation of God or that it is not. And that’s the starting point.
Oh well. It is a required class, so I suppose I should prepare to write a lot this term.
